January 2009

Riesling joins Pinot Noir on the Premium Quality Stage

Pinot Noir and Riesling produced from grapes grown in the Coal Valley just outside Hobart were the star performers at the 19th Tasmanian Wine Show with clients of Winemaking Tasmania performing exceptionally well.

John Shepherd's Clemens Hill Vineyard won three trophies for its 2006 pinot noir - best pinot noir, best red wine of the show and best three year old pinot noir (2005 vintage), showing it is one of the most consistent producers in the State. (Shepherd won the prestigious Qantas trophy for best pinot noir in open competition at the 2007 Royal Hobart International Wine Show for his 2005 vintage).

Senior Counsel and barrister Greg Melick won two trophies, three gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals for Rieslings of various styles - dry to sweet, from his Coal Valley vineyard, under his label Pressing Matters.

In all, wines made by the team at Winemaking Tasmania won seven of the 14 trophies awarded and a tremendous medal count:

  • 13 gold
  • 14 silver
  • 49 bronze

and a strike rate of 68% (wines awarded medals from total entries by clients of WMT).

Tassie Riesling Trumps Again.....

A wine made for The Wine Society by Julian Alcorso and the crew at Winemaking Tasmania, won the trophy for Best White Wine of the Show trophy at the International Cool Climate Wine Show 2008 on March 9. The wine. The Wine Society Tasmanian Riesling 2007 is marketed as Tasmanian Riesling and made from parcels of Riesling sourced from three Tasmanian vineyards, Derwent Estate, Craigow and Laurel Bank – all clients of Winemaking Tasmania. All win gold medals and trophies in their own right regularly at wine shows for their Riesling.
