FIRST TASMANIAN WINERY CERTIFIED GREEN

At the announcement of the Freshcare environmental certification and EntWine Australia membership ceremony at Winemaking Tasmania on March 24, 2011, are, from left: Amy Russell, Environmental Consultant, Antony Langdon, co-ordinator of environmental activities at Winemaking Tasmania, Belinda Hazell, director of the board of Freshcare Ltd, Julian Alcorso, Chief Winemaker and Managing Director Winemaking Tasmania and Andrew Hood, Tasmanian representative on Winemakers’ Federation of Australia. |

Specialist contract winemaker Winemaking Tasmania at Cambridge has achieved independent environmental certification the first winery in Tasmania to do so and one of the first in Australia.
Managing Director and chief winemaker Julian Alcorso says the winery has been working with consultant Amy Russell since late 2010 to achieve certification.
“Achieving independent environmental certification reinforces the values that we have always upheld at Winemaking Tasmania,” Julian Alcorso said.
“We recognise that driving resource efficiencies, minimising waste, cutting back usage of chemicals and fostering a culture of environmental protection amongst our employees is integral to long term business sustainability,” he said.
“It’s also vital from the brand positioning point of view for Tasmanian wine we are at the super premium end of the market, from vineyard right through to final wine production and bottling. We have a responsibility to continue the environmental stewardship that starts in the vineyards.”
Activities enhancing Winemaking Tasmania’s environmental performance include:
- returning grape skins, seeds and stalks to a local grape grower for composting and application to nearby Coal River Valley vineyards;
- wastewater treated on site under an innovative, purpose-built treatment plant and returned to a local greywater recycling scheme; and
- progressively revegetating the winery boundary with native trees and shrubs.
The certification is awarded under the Freshcare Environmental program. Certification has qualified Winemaking Tasmania for membership of EntWine Australia, the industry’s national voluntary environmental assurance program administered by the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia (WFA).
In addition to meeting the requirements of environmental certification, being a member of EntWine also means that Winemaking Tasmania will report the winery’s carbon footprint, water use, wastewater produced, amount of waste recycled and other such information to the WFA every year.
WFA Chief Executive Stephen Strachan congratulated Winemaking Tasmania on its achievement.
“The company has recognised the value of adding sustainability credentials to its already strong reputation and that will stand it in good stead in the years ahead,” he said.
“Given the reach the company has in Tasmania, this will assist the state’s wine sector to work towards the highest sustainability standards across the production chain.”
Winemaking Tasmania is the second biggest winery in the State, processing around 1200 tonnes of premium quality Tasmanian grapes into wine for both Tasmanian vineyards and large producers interstate such as Treasury Wine Estates (formerly Fosters). Vintage harvest is currently underway, doubling the winery’s workforce from 10 to 20.
