 The winemaking team consists of four qualified and highly experienced winemakers. It is led by senior winemaker Julian Alcorso. Winemakers John Schuts, Greer Carland and Matt Wood complete the team.

The winemaking team is well supported by a team of cellar-hands, casual and administrative staff and contractors.

Julian Alcorso
Senior Winemaker / Managing Director
Julian is recognised as one of the pioneers of the modern-day Tasmanian wine industry, having made his first wines from the family vineyard Moorilla Estate in 1978. He grew the business to be one of the State’s premier wineries and tourist attractions before moving north to the Tamar Valley to establish Tamar Ridge Wines in 1998. In 2001 he left to establish Winemaking Tasmania. Julian is a multi-award winning winemaker and in 1994 was named in the top 12 winemakers in Australia

John Schuts
Winemaker
John grew up in Busselton, next door to Margaret River in Western Australia. He entered university in his mid twenties after completing an apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic and travelling the world for four years. He studied a Bachelor of Science (Viticulture and Oenology) at Curtin Univesity of Technology in Perth, Western Australia. During that time he worked at Mosswood winery in Margaret River, spent summer breaks working at Glenmore Vineyard and in his final year at Amberley Estate winery, producing an excellent range of commercial white wines. He worked the 2003 vintage at Capel Vale winery in the Geographe Region of Western Australia before moving south to Tasmania to join Winemaking Tasmania in time for vintage 2003.

Greer Carland
Winemaker
Greer joined the winemaking team in July 2004. Greer is a fully qualified oenologist, having graduated from the University of Adelaide in December 2000. Her experience encompasses ten vintages across Australia and overseas in predominantly premium cool climate regions. The combination of her wide ranging experience, knowledge of the industry, passion for wine making and attention to detail makes Greer a great asset to the team.
Greer is involved in all facets of premium wine production but specialises in sparkling wine production. She won a Sapin Goddard Jaloustre Trust scholarship to visit Burgundy, Alsace and Champagne in 2006.

Matt Wood
Winemaker / Mobile Contract Services Manager
Matt Wood grew up in Perth, Western Australia where he completed a Bachelor Engineering (Environmental) at Uni of WA in 1994 before heading to Margaret River to surf and pick grapes but ended up staying 12 years. He worked at MossWood initially then was employed by Higher Plane Wines to establish and manage their vineyard, and assist with the winemaking under consultation from MossWood. During this time he completed his Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) at Charles Sturt Uni (Wagga Wagga, NSW). In 2005 Matt took on the assistant winemaker role with Vasse River Oenological Services, a 500-tonne contract winery producing a range of wine styles for 30 clients with vineyards located throughout the Margaret River and Geographe wine regions. He moved toTasmania in September 2007 to join the Winemaking Tasmania team to learn more about cool climate wines, especially Pinot Noir and Riesling.

Ko Hironaka and Aron Mills
Cellar Hands
Ko Hironaka and Aron Mills are the cellarhands providing key support to the winemaking unit of Winemaking Tasmania. Ko has many years’ experience in wineries. Aron is currently completing his apprenticeship in Certificate II Food Processing (Wine).

Keryn Nylander
Administration / Client Liaison
Keryn Nylander provides administrative support to the managing director, as well as organises special events such as the Client Benchmarking Day and Open Weekend activities as part of Southern Tasmania Open Vineyards Weekend. She is also responsible for Workplace Safety.
